Counseling Center Expanding

Pastoral Counseling Services of Central Virginia will become part of Presbyterian Homes & Family Services and the Family Alliance.

On July 1, 2011, Pastoral Counseling Services of Central Virginia will join with Presbyterian Homes &Family Services and the Family Alliance’s Counseling Center. This move will expand the services offered and will help more individuals and families throughout the community.

Traditionally, Pastoral Counseling Services of Central Virginia has provided dependable and professional help for people facing the distresses and difficulties of everyday life. Pastoral Counseling is a unique form of therapy which uses spiritual resources as well as psychological understanding for healing and growth. Now it will be part of PHFS and the Family Alliance’s Counseling Center, which provides professional counseling to individuals, children, teens, couples and families who are experiencing significant emotional or psychological challenges in their lives.

“Pastoral Counseling Services of Central Virginia has been around for 43 years and the last thing I wanted to do was shut it down when I retired,” said Nathan Brooks, Executive Director of PCSCV. “The emerging partnership with Presbyterian Homes & Family Services and the Family Alliance is very exciting to me because it provides a permanent home for pastoral counseling in our community. This allows us to continue our mission of extending the healing ministry of our respective faith communities to all of Central Virginia.”

“Joining forces with Nathan Brooks and his team at Pastoral Counseling Center is an extremely positive thing for our organizations and the community,” said Tom Prest, Vice President of Programs for PHFS and the Family Alliance. “We are pleased to be able to offer counseling from a faith-based perspective to those in need in the community in our array of mental health services. While this is a positive partnership for today, our goal is to ensure pastoral counseling services will be a part of our community for years to come.”

PHFS and the Family Alliance provide services and programs to help children, adults and families in the community. The programs range from credit counseling and parenting classes to residential care for at-risk teens and adults with intellectual disabilities.  Our programs and services wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of individuals, churches, foundations and corporations. PHFS and the Family Alliance merged in July 2010 to have a greater impact on the communities we serve and are working together to strengthen families for success. We serve 8500 individuals annually.
